In the Manage tab select Alarm Definitions and click Add to start the Alarm Definition wizard. To create a VM snapshot alarm for all virtual machines in a vCenter’s inventory select the vCenter Server.
Creating a Snapshot AlarmĪn alarm can be created to display a warning or alert on a virtual machine if a snapshot grows to be larger than a threshold set in an alarm trigger.
This post covers some different options that are available for monitoring snapshot usage. Snapshots are a great tool but it is important that you monitor the snapshots to ensure they do not grow too large. The snapshot continued to grow and had become so large that it was causing performance issues with the VM and could not be deleted due to the lack of space on the datastore. This is a common issue, at least I have seen this happen fairly often.

The issues was caused by a snapshot created by their backup software that had not been committed after the backup job completed. The cause ended up being a large virtual machine snapshot that was too large to consolidate due to a lack of space on the datastore. The report helps you monitor storage capacities to ensure your VMs have sufficient room to operate.Recently had a customer that was experiencing some performance issues and had a datastore that was low on space.
Group by : defines how data will be grouped in the report output (by Virtual Server or Datacenter ). Otherwise, the report will contain no data. Note that the reporting period must include at least one successfully completed Object properties data collection task for the selected scope. Period : defines the time period to analyze in the report. However, if you select groups from different categories, the report will contain only objects that are included in all selected groups. That is, if you select groups from the same category, the report will contain all objects that are included in groups. The parameter options are limited to objects of the Storage type.īusiness View groups from the same category are joined using Boolean OR operator, Business View groups from different categories are joined using Boolean AND operator. Business View objects : defines Business View groups to analyze in the report. Infrastructure objects : defines a virtual infrastructure level and its sub-components to analyze in the report. The Most Growing Datastores and Least Growing Datastores charts display top datastores with smallest and largest decrease in free space during the specified time period. The Datastores with Most Free Space and Datastores with Least Free Space charts display top datastores with the smallest and the largest amount of used space.
